| 219 * VALENTINE |
[14 Feb 2007|10:12am] |
Today is Valentine's Day, and I'm not going to wax lyrical about love and what not. Strangely enough, it's days like these that make me miss school all the more, what with angel-mortal revelations. Last year I didn't know who my angel was until the day itself and similarly my moral didn't know (although he did suspect) who I was. This year I can only imagine the thrill and excitement going on in school, only a bit wilder, because when reading juniors' blogs I feel remarkably old and prudish. And this, Hoh Jianyang would say, makes me sound like Pak, which is terrible in many senses - not because Pak is a terrible person, because it is terrible to sound terribly old.
I'm kidding Pak, you have a nice Valentine's Day.
I haven't posted here much recently, because I think I've been settling down. Going to Vietnam has changed me a lot, probably more in perspective than in anything else. Then again, I firmly believe that I am still easily impressionable at this age and hence perspectives will change and morph over time. I wrote a paragraph to put in this blog when I was in Vietnam and then I suddenly got a mindblock and so just left it as it is. Today seems like a good day to dig it up even though it probably makes no sense and makes this entry terribly disjointed. But more for me than for anyone else, here it is:
( I miss Pho Bo and Ca Phe Sua Da. )
My brother's New Year Resolution for last year was to do things you wouldn't normally do and yesterday I certainly crossed my threshold. YQ took me out to play mahjong with his friends, and one of them happened to be Wenny's cousin. That was pretty shocking and had me stunned for pretty much the entire night. Then came the gambling and the rapid losing of money, because it was obvious that I was hardly experienced and was desperately getting trounced. Halfway through the night I had already incurred losses of $25 and then before I knew it I won over $20 in one game. Unfortunately, luck can never triumph over experience and my total losses were $13, with the bill happily footed by YQ. The details here are unnecessary and more for keepsake, because I cannot foresee myself going through another 2am mahjong session, sitting in a car going at over 100km/h as I try to rush home in 5 minutes. I think I had fun mostly, but this lifestyle is much too wild for me. I think of Dingxuan and his hooligan friends and the similar mischief they get up to and I am appalled at the fact that I've gone down a similar path. That said, mahjong with chips (as in money, not food) brings out an adrenaline monster. My fingers are itching to get going again, although I will not get addicted to mahjong with money because I know I will lose.
Jianyang asked me to write a play by play review of Dramafeste, which I spent most of my time in work doing yesterday. I haven't decided as yet if I should post it up here, because if I do, I would probably get flamed like anything. Unfortunately I do not have the same creative license as Alfian so I am not immune from vicious attacks from Greek gods and goddesses left right and centre.
After a very long entry, Happy Valentine's Day to all, and much envy from me to you if you got to spend it with a loved one this year.

| 218 * SAIGON |
[25 Jan 2007|10:23am] |
So I've spent 6 days in Saigon, otherwise known as Ho Chi Minh City, and the most groundbreaking thing that has happened to me yet is my burning a towel in my hotel room. The previously immaculately white towel is now brown and has a hole in it - all thanks to my aversion to bright light which set forth a whole series of incidents that are far too laborious to document here.
On another note, if there's anybody thinking of taking law, please let me know and I'll send you some documents that are guaranteed to make you think twice.
Enjoying this sense of independence very much, but missing people very dearly as well. :(
